October 2026 delivered two stories that capture crypto’s promise and its risks.
AI agents get a payments layer
On 21 October, Yellow Network, which Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen backed with $10 million, announced on X a trust and settlement layer letting autonomous AI agents transact and settle on the XRP Ledger. Yellow handles deals off-chain through fast state channels, then sends them to the XRP Ledger for final settlement. Its token jumped almost 200% to a record $0.146 on the news, though the proposal gave no launch date or technical details.
It lands amid fast growth: the XRPL AI Hub logged about 13.49 million agentic transactions across 168 merchants in October, up from 1 million in July. Settlement values remain small.
Binance suffers record breach
The month also tested the industry’s resilience. On 29 October, attackers drained about $6.3 billion from Binance wallets across ten blockchains in roughly 20 minutes, the largest crypto theft on record. Binance said the breach likely began with an engineer’s compromised laptop. TRM Labs tied it to North Korean state-backed hackers. Roughly $3 billion has been frozen, Binance pledged to cover all losses, and Bitcoin fell about 5% to below $77,000.
The takeaway
Innovation is accelerating, but security remains crypto’s weakest link.
