September 2026 Crypto News: CLARITY Act Vote, Bitget Hack, and Bitcoin Breaks Above 80K

On 15 September, the Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act after a 49–50 cloture vote, short of the 60 votes required. The procedural defeat—driven by unified Democratic opposition and four Republican no votes—left the bill stalled rather than dead, with a technical path to reconsideration preserved. Markets reacted sharply: Bitcoin dropped over 5% as the outcome became clear.

Bitget hack

On 24 September, Bitget detected unauthorized transfers from hot and warm wallets, later revised to about $387.5 million stolen. The exchange said attackers exploited a third‑party security product, gained internal credentials, and spoofed withdrawal instructions to bypass risk controls. CEO Gracy Chen flagged patterns consistent with North Korean groups; investigations with Mandiant and SlowMist continue.

Bitget stated customer balances are accurate and losses are covered by its $464M+ User Protection Fund, with withdrawals resuming in phases from 28 September.

Bitcoin above $80K

Despite the CLARITY setback, Bitcoin reclaimed $80,000 mid‑month, trading around $81k–$83k and briefly tapping $86k. Analysts cited ETF demand and improving macro sentiment, while noting $87k–$90k as the next resistance zone.
